Would a rose by any other name smell as sweet?
Port Side Petals and Gifts is hoping for residents of the city to back the notion.
Formerly known as Arlie’s, the Clarence Street shop has new owners who had to give the shop a new direction.
Port Side Petals and Gifts is a florist and gift shop located near West Street.
Lisa Terreberry, one of the owners, said they ran a contest to determine the new name.
Terreberry said the previous owner named the story after their mother and gave them one year to chance the name.
She said they received over 300 applicants with different names and things so it took around six months to narrow down.
“There was a lot of a lot of good names out there so it’s hard to pick,” said Terreberry.
She said Arlie’s had been in business for over 45 years starting on King Street.
When she saw a Facebook posting advertising the store she figured “why not? We’ll give this a shot.”
She explained how she and her husband took flower courses online due to the pandemic.
Terreberry said her husband is currently working full-time with plans to retire. He helps out with delivering orders and around the shop, she said.
Owning a business like this is a first for her, she said, noting her previous job experience was in managing restaurants.
One of the lessons she said she has learned is to “listen” to learn how to make people happy.
Terreberry said they often deal with funeral homes and she said she recognizes it is “emotionally a tough time for the family.”
She noted they have to step their game up as “we are the only game in town.”
Terreberry said their store also fell victim to supply chain shortages.
It is getting better now, she said, but noted back around last December it was very difficult to get inventory in like vases or containers or something.
“If you wanted to get clear ones you could only get color and if you wanted color you could get clear. It was back and forth,” she said. “There are still a few things that are on high demand that we can’t get right.”
She said the response from the town so far has been “phenomenal.”
