For many investors, the main point of stock picking is to generate higher returns than the overall market. But its virtually certain that sometimes you will buy stocks that fall short of the market average returns. Unfortunately, that’s been the case for longer term Link Real Estate Investment Trust (HKG:823) shareholders, since the share price is down 34% in the last three years, falling well short of the market decline of around 2.3%.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the three years that the share price fell, Link Real Estate Investment Trust’s earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 30% each year. In comparison the 13% compound annual share price decline isn’t as bad as the EPS drop-off. This suggests that the market retains some optimism around long-term earnings stability, despite past EPS declines.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It’s fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Link Real Estate Investment Trust, it has a TSR of -25% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
While it’s certainly disappointing to see that Link Real Estate Investment Trust shares lost 8.6% throughout the year, that wasn’t as bad as the market loss of 16%. Longer term investors wouldn’t be so upset, since they would have made 5%, each year, over five years.
