MATTA Fair Sabah aims to generate RM20mil in sales; 30,000 visitors

PENAMPANG: The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair Sabah is expected to rake in RM20mil in sales and attract 30,000 visitors during the two-day event.

Sabah MATTA chapter chairman Lawrence Chin Choon Leong said this was their target for the event currently happening at a mall in Penampang this weekend.

“It could be more, but I believe we can hit this target easily,” he told reporters after the launch of the fair here on Saturday (July 9).

Among the packages being offered by exhibitors are destinations in Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and countries whose tourism sector has re-opened.

“There are also domestic packages offered by Penang agents, for example,” he said, adding that exhibitors included those from Peninsular Malaysia, and not just Sabah.

In total, there are 50 exhibitors which also include hoteliers and airlines, said Chin.

Meanwhile, state Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, when launching the fair, congratulated MATTA president Datuk Tan Kok Loang and Chin for making the annual event possible after it was halted due to Covid-19 pandemic.

“It is a good thing that so many industry leaders and captains have banded together to promote both domestic and international travel and tourism, after a nearly two-year absence.

“We appreciate the Sabah MATTA chapter’s continuous efforts to promote the state and to help the tourism industry in this state get back on its feet.

“As we transition into the endemic phase, we have faith and hope that the process of recovery in the tourism industry will advance rapidly, as the situation becomes more stable,” added Bangkuai.
