Me and my health: Raymond Walsh on his lifestyle

Raymond Walsh is vice president at FinTrU and a member of the company wellbeing committee TrU Wellness.

Do you regularly exercise and if so, what do you do?

I like to attend the gym most evenings and will vary my exercises between weights and cardio. To keep some accountability I also have a personal trainer, so this helps keep me motivated on days I don’t feel like exercising. I also like to walk a lot, so give me a nice beach or a mountain (on a dry day).

What is the worst illness you’ve had?

Thankfully I have managed to avoid any serious physical illnesses in life. When I think about one of the worst, it would probably be mental health-related illnesses, which can be very debilitating. However, to come out the other side and look back at how far you’ve grown as a person is always very satisfying.

How healthy is your diet?

At the moment my diet is healthier than it is not. I am currently going to a personal trainer, so I have to track my foods daily. This provides accountability. And when I want that mid-week takeaway, I try to go for the healthy option of a ‘fakeaway’. I do enjoy the odd Chinese takeaway but I try to save those for the weekends.

Any bad habits?

I have a terrible sweet tooth, so I do like to eat too many sweets and sugary things. I particularly have a weakness for chocolate. Pre-Covid, I don’t think anyone would have been shocked or surprised to see a packet of sweets on my desk at all times, and I would imagine that habit will raise its head now and again.

Do you take any supplements?

When I remember, I try to take a multivitamin.

How do you take time out?

I like to find a beach and some sea and just walk. I find it very relaxing to listen to the sound of waves and the general calmness of the beach, even on a stormy day. You will often find me perched somewhere on the North Coast at the weekend or taking a dander along Portstewart Strand.

And less local, I like to holiday, experience new places, new people, new food. I have been greeted the odd time by a “Where have you booked next?”. If anyone wants to know, I have a road trip from Nashville to New Orleans, a few days in Miami and then a Caribbean cruise.

I had the opportunity this year to take some extra time off work through FinTrU’s ‘Unplugged’ benefit.

It’s a great initiative that allows anyone with five years’ service to avail of an extra four weeks to literally unplug from work, take time out and relax, which is important. I am thankful that FinTrU is a company that has such great employee benefits as one perks of the job and it has been supportive in allowing me to take this time.

How well do you sleep?

Sleep is something that somewhat evades me. I rarely, if ever, get the standard seven-eight hours a night and manage to get by somewhere between five or six hours. I once read an article that said great leaders / thinkers only sleep for four hours, so we will see how that pans out for me.

Do you worry about getting old?

I don’t. I am embracing it. I remember when people started commenting on my “gray” hairs, which are gradually appearing more and more, I shrugged my shoulders and said OK.

Aging is going to happen, and rather than worry, it’s better to understand everything that comes with it and embrace it. A good face cream to keep the wrinkles at bay, exercise to keep the body healthy – all those things contribute.

What is your go-to product that keeps you feeling healthy?

I am not sure I have one single go-to product. I like to use a range of options, products and activities to keep me healthy. Whether this is the gym, multivitamins, healthy eating or a good face cream, they are all important in keeping me feeling good and feeling healthy.
