Postdoctoral Research Associate job with KINGS COLLEGE LONDON

Job description

The Department of Global Health and Social Medicine (GHSM) is looking to appoint a Research Assistant/Associate in Global Adolescent Mental Health. The postholder will work with Dr Kelly Rose-Clarke and colleagues at Transcultural Psychosocial Organization (TPO) Nepal to evaluate a school-based psychological intervention for adolescents with depression in Nepal using a realist cluster-randomised controlled trial design. We want to know if the intervention works, how, and for whom, to help us understand how it can be optimized and where it could be implemented.

The post holder will have the opportunity to:

• Work with TPO Nepal, a leading global mental health organization

• Join GHSM’s multidisciplinary community of critical global health researchers and social scientists and collaborate with colleagues at the KCL Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience.

• Gain experience in designing and conducting realistic randomized controlled trials

• Build skills in survey design, data management and governance, and qualitative and quantitative data analysis

• With support from the wider research team, write at least one first author article and participate in others as a co-author.

The postholder will assist Kelly Rose-Clarke (GHSM) and TPO Nepal to develop a logic model of a psychological intervention and develop and implement data collection methods to test and refine components of the model through a pilot study and realistic randomized trial. The post holder will be involved in disseminating results through publications, presentations, and community engagement activities.

The post is based in GHSM, London, UK, with occasional travel to Nepal and is funded through Kelly Rose-Clarke’s UK Research and Innovation Future Leaders Fellowship.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 3 years

This is a full-time or part-time post 80-100% full time equivalent starting Oct 2022

Key responsibilities

• Support the design and implementation of a realistic randomized controlled trial

• Coordinate communication across the research team, including in person and virtual meetings and workshops

• Support the development of a logic model of interpersonal therapy for adolescents with depression in Nepal by reviewing literature, organizing stakeholder workshops, and analyzing existing data

• Monitor project progress and budgets

• Conduct analyzes of qualitative and quantitative data in collaboration with Kelly Rose-Clarke and other members of the research team in Nepal and the UK

• Participate in preparing publications based on research findings, including writing at least one first author paper

• Support and participate in training for junior members of the research team in Nepal and the UK

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

1. A PhD in a relevant area (eg global mental health, psychology, public health or epidemiology).

2. Experience of conducting research in the Global South

3. Experience of writing peer-reviewed publications

4. Ability to work collaboratively across countries and disciplines

5. Strong communication skills

6. Ability and enthusiasm to travel to Nepal

7. Good knowledge of Stata

8. Qualitative and quantitative analysis skills

Desirable criteria

1. Experience researching or delivering psychological therapies

2. Involvement in planning and running a cluster-randomised controlled trial

3. Experience of realistic evaluations

* Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting the award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.
